Presentational Devices

Presentational devices are things that catch our eye. To score highly in your exam, you will need to explain:
Why has a text been produced? What is the purpose?
What type of person is the text aimed at? Are they wealthy? Well educated? Young? Old? Male? Female?
How has the text been made to attract its target audience? What techniques are being used?

Sample question: How does the following text use presentational devices to attract its target audience?

Sample answer:

In the above example, the purpose of the text, is to persuade people to visit Australia. It uses a variety of devices to do this but the main one is the beautiful photograph. The picture shows long, but empty beaches, which suggests exclusivity and that not everyone could afford to visit the place. This is our first clue as to the target audience: they are aiming to attract the wealthy…
