Noun Phrases

Ray

A noun phrase is a group of words with a noun as its most important word, or head.

The other words in the noun phrase will depend on the head in some way.

Noun phrases can be different sizes, but serve the same purpose in a sentence.

For example,

The woman was nice.
The woman who we met at the party was nice.

Both of the sentence openings are noun phrases with ‘The woman’ as the head.

You can build a noun phrase by adding words before it:

Cars are lots of fun.
Convertible cars are lots of fun.
New convertible cars are lots of fun.

Or after it:

Cars with seats are lots of fun.
Cars with leather seats are lots of fun.

Remember, check the noun that affects the verb to find the head of a noun phrase.
